Milestone of Development: Birth to Age 5

Chapter 9 of your textbook presents an overview of important developmental milestones in infancy and childhood. Imagine that you work for a local social services agency and have been asked to speak to a group of parents, all of whom have children under the age of 5. Create a brief presentation by answering the following questions and then incorporating the answers into your talk.

Using your textbook as a guide, list the major milestones of development (such as those described in Figure 9.3 in your text) that you think parents should know about. You do not need to list everything—just those milestones that seem really important. But, do be sure to include major milestones of physical development, language development, and cognitive development.
Your answer has been provisionally accepted. You'll get full credit for now, but your instructor may update your grade later after evaluating it.

Many parents, including those in your audience, are interested in strategies for improving their children’s cognitive development. Based on the existing research, would you recommend video training programs to this group of parents? Why or why not?
Your answer has been provisionally accepted. You'll get full credit for now, but your instructor may update your grade later after evaluating it.

According to Jean Piaget, how do infants and toddlers in the sensorimotor stage acquire knowledge about the world?
Suggested Answer: During the sensorimotor stage, infants acquire information about the world by exploring with their senses. They learn a great deal of information about objects through taste, touch, smell, and sound. Babies also learn by using motor actions, such as reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, and pouring. In the process, they also gain a better understanding of the effects of their own actions.
