The Client-Centered Approach: Carl Rogers and “Gloria”

Carl Rogers is the well-known founder of the humanistic perspective of psychology and master of the client-centered approach. Rogers authored a staple in psychological literature, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy (1961), which provides a comprehensive overview and a thought-provoking evaluation of the client-centered approach. In this activity, you will have an opportunity to observe Carl Rogers as he conducts therapy with a client named Gloria. Although the video is from 1965, it still provides an excellent illustration of client-centered therapy. You can locate the footage on YouTube by typing in: Carl Rogers and Gloria—Full Session. Using your textbook and examples from the video, answer the following questions:

Suggested Answer: According to Rogers, empathetic understanding requires the therapist to listen actively for the personal meaning beneath the surface of what the client is saying. In other words, when the therapeutic atmosphere contains genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and empathetic understanding, change is more likely to occur. Moreover, the client moves toward the direction of self-actualization, or the realization of his or her unique potentials and talents.
