According to Rogers, empathetic understanding requires the therapist to listen actively for the personal meaning beneath the surface of what the client is saying. In other words, when the therapeutic atmosphere contains genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and empathetic understanding, change is more likely to occur. Moreover, the client moves toward the direction of self-actualization, or the realization of his or her unique potentials and talents.
