Working in a group, find an example of a short argument that impresses most of you. (Your instructor might suggest a particular article.) Carefully locate the claims within the piece that all of you regard as its most important, impressive, or controversial statements. Then see if you can formulate the premises or values upon which these claims rest. Try to state these premises as clearly as you can in a complete, declarative sentence. Are the assumptions you uncovered statements that you agree with? If the assumptions are controversial, does the piece explain or defend them? Be prepared to present your group’s analysis and conclusions in class.
