Your Turn

After Richard Nixon won forty-nine states in the 1972 presidential election, the distinguished film critic Pauline Kael is reported to have said, “How can he have won? I don’t know anyone who voted for him.” Can you think of any times when you have similarly misread a situation because you did not have a perspective broad enough to understand all the forces in play? Identify such a situation and consider whether it might provide you with a topic for an explanatory paper. Alternatively, consider some of the times — maybe even beginning in childhood — when you have heard explanations for phenomena that you recognized as wildly implausible because they were superstitions, stereotypes, or simply errors. Consider whether you might turn one of these misconceptions into a topic for an explanatory paper.
