When the Capetian king Charles IV died in 1328, his daughter was next in line for the French throne, but prejudice in France against female succession was so strong that the crown went to the Valois branch of the family. Meanwhile the English king Edward III, as son of the French princess Isabella, claimed to be the rightful king of France.
