George Whitefield
This colored etching depicts one of the most prominent preachers of the Great Awakening, the English Methodist George Whitefield, preaching in the British North American colonies. Whitefield visited the colonies seven times, sometimes for long periods, and drew tens of thousands of people to his dramatic and emotional open-air sermons, which moved many listeners to tears of repentance. Whitefield was a celebrity in his time and is considered by many to be the founder of the Evangelical movement. (The Granger Collection, NYC—All rights reserved.)
