New Housing in Vienna

Politicians saw to the building of “homes for heroes” across postwar Europe, and Vienna was one leader in constructing modern housing for the working class. With many veterans enraged by the war experience and with socialist revolution a looming threat, new housing, it was hoped, would help return men to peaceful civilian life. (© Bettmann/Corbis.)
