Gal4 recruits the transcriptional machinery. The Gal4 protein, and many other transcriptional activators, binds to multiple protein complexes, including the TFIID and mediator complexes shown here (dotted arrows), that recruit RNA polymerase II to gene promoters. The interactions facilitate gene activation through binding sites that are distant from gene promoters.
