Proteins differ in mutation rate

Number of amino acid substitutions in the evolution of the vertebrates as a function of time since divergence. The three proteins— fibrinopeptides, hemoglobin, and cytochrome c—differ in substitution rate because different proportions of their amino acid substitutions are selectively neutral.
