Crossing over is between chromatids, not chromosomes

Crossing over takes place at the four-chromatid stage. Because more than two different products of a single meiosis can be seen in some tetrads, crossing over cannot take place at the two-strand stage (before DNA replication). The white circle designates the position of the centromere. When sister chromatids are visible, the centromere appears unreplicated.
