A heterokaryon of Neurospora and similar fungi mimics a diploid state. When vegetative cells fuse, haploid nuclei share the same cytoplasm in a heterokaryon. In this example, haploid nuclei with mutations in different genes in the arginine synthetic pathway complement to produce a Neurospora that no longer requires arginine.
