The initiation complex forms at the 5′ end of the mRNA and then scans in the 3′ direction in search of a start codon. Recognition of the start codon triggers the assembly of the complete ribosome and the dissociation of initiation factors (not shown). The hydrolysis of ATP provides energy to drive the scanning process.
