Correlation in the physical activity study. The Minitab output for the physical activity example appears in Figure 10.17. The sample correlation between BMI and the average number of steps per day (PA) is r = −0.385. Minitab calls this a Pearson correlation to distinguish it from other kinds of correlations that it can calculate. The P-value for a two-sided test of H0: ρ = 0 is given as 0.000. This means that the actual P-value is less than 0.0005. We conclude that there is a nonzero correlation between BMI and PA.
