Investigating differences in sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has been linked to Type 2 diabetes and obesity. One study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to estimate consumption of these beverages among children. More than 14,000 individuals provided data for this study. Individuals were divided into three age categories: preschoolers (two to five years old), preadolescents (6 to 11 years old), and adolescents (12 to 19 years old).3 Here are the means for the number of calories in sugar-sweetened beverages consumed per day during 2003 to 2006 and 2007 to 2010:
