Figure 1.8: Uluru, or Ayers Rock, in Australia’s Northern Territory. This monolith was first named Ayers Rock in 1873 in honor of Sir Henry Ayers, the (then) Chief Secretary of South Australia. In 1993, it was renamed Uluru/Ayers Rock, incorporating a word from a local Aboriginal language, under a new dual-language naming policy adopted in Australia.
