Religious place names dot the map of French Canada. In the French-Canadian province of Québec, the dominant Roman Catholic religion finds an expression in the names given to towns and villages. Saints’ names are dominant in the area of purest French settlement. Nearer the U.S.–Canadian border, in townships settled by English-speaking people, religious place names are rare.
