As a typical migraine scotoma develops, a person looking at the small white × in the photograph at the far left would first see a small patch of lines. This striped area continues growing outward, leaving an opaque area (scotoma) where the stripes were, almost completely blocking the visual field within 15 to 20 minutes. Normal vision returns shortly thereafter.
