JOYCE CAROL OATES: I think that, like many children, I was very "creative," quote unquote. I liked to color in a coloring book and with crayons and draw and that sort of thing. So I think that writing is basically just an offshoot or a consequence of early childhood creativity. And I never really thought of myself as a writer for a long time.
