Figure 2.1 The Structure of an Atom An atom has a nucleus composed of neutrons and protons surrounded by a cloud of rapidly moving electrons. Although the nucleus accounts for virtually all of the atomic weight, it occupies only 1/10,000 of the atom’s volume. This type of representation, which is called a Bohr model, depicts individual electrons moving in “orbits” at set distances from the nucleus.
