Figure 26.4 A Dinoflagellate The presence of two flagella is characteristic of many dinoflagellates, although these appendages are contained within deep grooves and thus are seldom visible. One flagellum lies within the equatorial groove and provides forward thrust and spin to the organism. The second flagellum originates in the longitudinal groove and acts like the rudder of a boat.
