Figure 28.24 The Global Seed Vault This vault is located over 100 meters inside a sandstone mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, about 1,000 kilometers from the North Pole. The location was chosen for secure, long-term storage of seeds because the surrounding ground is perpetually frozen and the site is secure against earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters.
