Clonal deletion helps the immune system distinguish self from nonself

Normally the body is tolerant of its own molecules. One way that the immune system does this is through the process of clonal deletion. This occurs during the early differentiation of T and B cells, when these cells encounter self antigens. Any immature B or T cell that shows the potential to mount an immune response against self antigens undergoes apoptosis within a short time.
