Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP)

When blood volume increases, the atria of the heart stretch as a result of the increased load. This stretching causes the atrial muscle fibers to release ANP, a hormone that promotes Na+ and water excretion. ANP acts through multiple mechanisms in the kidneys, the adrenals, and the brain.
