Symphonies of Haydn

Even before Mozart’s maturity, his older colleague Joseph Haydn was already a master of the Classical symphony. He composed over a hundred of them, averaging more than one a year over the last two decades of his active career, from 1780 to 1800. His most famous symphonies are the last twelve, written for concerts in London, where Haydn enjoyed enormous acclaim on two tours after his retirement from the court of the Esterházy princes. For our examples of second, third, and fourth movements from Classical symphonies, we select from Haydn’s so-called London symphonies.
