Exercise: Considering effects of standard English

Find a passage in a story or in an article written in a regional, an ethnic, or a communal variety of English. Identify the purpose and audience for the passage. Then rewrite the passage to remove all evidence of any variety of English other than the “standard.” Compare your revised version with the original and with those produced by some of your classmates. What differences do you notice in tone (is it more formal? more distant? something else?) and in overall impression? Which version seems most appropriate for the intended audience and purpose? Which do you prefer, and why?
Respond in the text box below, also indicating source information for the passage you chose. When you are finished, click Submit to record your answer. If your instructor has assigned this exercise, your answer will be submitted to the gradebook.
