The Spirit of America, Join, ca. 1917–1918

In this other American poster, the artist moved even further away from the traditional matronly image of the nurse. Bare arms and a plunging neckline sexualize the image. The small red cross on the headpiece is the only clear evidence that the woman depicted in the poster is a nurse. Besides the nurse herself, the dominant element in the image is the American flag that curls around her. She holds the staff in one hand and presses the tip of the flag to her heart with the other. As you examine the poster, compare and contrast it to Third Red Cross Roll Call. What similarities and differences do you see? What does this suggest about the intended message of each poster?
