It Was a Conservative . . . , 1978

As has been the case in recent decades with the Republican Party in the United States, the Conservatives drew their support disproportionately from men. Margaret Thatcher’s rise to the position of party leader gave the Conservatives an opportunity to reduce this gender gap. This poster linked the Conservative Party to landmarks in the history of British women. As you examine it, think about the claims it makes. On what aspects of gender equality does it focus? What aspects of the struggle for women’s rights does it leave out? Why?
