Diocletian’s TetrarchyThis sculpture represents the possibilities and problems of the tetrarchy established by the emperor Diocletian to rule the Roman Empire. Each of the four men has one hand on another’s shoulder, a symbol of solidarity, but the other on his sword, a gesture that proved prophetic when the tetrarchy failed soon after Diocletian’s death and another struggle for power began.
