Based on the documents included in this chapter, how would you characterize the motives behind the new imperialism?
Compare the documents produced by the Westerners, Stanley, Twain, and Hobson (Documents 24-4, 24-5, and 24-6). Where do they seem to differ, and what similarities can you see? What differences in perspective might account for their different ideas on colonization?
Based on their documents, would Commissioner Lin (Document 24-1) agree with Hobson’s views (Document 24-6) on the dangers of imperial trade?
Compare and contrast the Twain pamphlet (Document 24-5) and the Cecil Rhodes cartoon (Document 24-3). How did each try to shape public opinion about imperialism? How might Rhodes have responded to accusations similar to those leveled by Twain against Leopold II?
How might Ferry (Document 24-2) respond to Hobson’s argument (Document 24-6)? What critique would Hobson offer of Ferry’s position?
