Spanish Atrocities in the New World The illustrations provided by Theodor de Bry to accompany Bartolomé de Las Casas’s Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies depict atrocities committed by the Spanish in their conquest and settlement of the Americas. De Bry, a converted Protestant, thereby contributed to the “Black Legend” of Spanish colonization.
