This engraving from 1814 shows traders leading a group of slaves to the West African coast, where they will board ships to cross the Atlantic. Many slaves died en route or arrived greatly weakened and ill. The newspaper advertisement of the sale of a ship’s cargo of slaves in Charleston, South Carolina, promises “fine healthy negroes,” testifying to the dangers of the crossing and to the frequency of epidemic diseases like smallpox.
