First Hot-Air Balloon Flight, 1783 This engraving depicts the world’s first free hot-air balloon flight as seen from the Parisian residence of Benjamin Franklin, who was then serving as American ambassador to France. The balloon, invented by the Montgolfier brothers, traveled over five miles in a twenty-minute flight to great public acclaim.
