Gold Staff Handle Roaring lions made from lapis lazuli decorate this golden socket from the seventh to sixth century B.C.E. Fragments of bone in the socket indicate this was the handle of a long staff, like that seen held by Assyrian and Persian kings. Then, as now, lions were a symbol of royalty and strength.
