German Bomber over Warsaw Germany opened its September 1939 attack on Poland by subjecting the Polish capital to repeated bombardment. By the end of the war, both sides had engaged in massive air campaigns against civilian targets, taking the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and leading finally to the use of the atomic bomb against Japan in 1945.
