Egyptian Man
Life remained gracious in the great cities of North Africa and the Middle East even as Islam brought new traditions. This image of a man wearing a turban and holding a cup is from a wall painting. Found in Egypt, it dates to the eleventh century, during the Fatimid caliphate. (Islamic Art Museum, Cairo, Egypt/De Agostini Picture Library/Gianni Dagli Orti/The Bridgeman Art Library)
