The Development of the Internet and the Web

“The dream behind the Web is of a common information space in which we communicate by sharing information. Its universality is essential: the fact that a hyper-text link can point to anything, be it personal, local, or global, be it draft or highly polished.”

TIM BERNERS-LEE, INVENTOR OF THE WORLD WIDE WEB, 2000

From its humble origins as a military communications network in the 1960s, the Internet became increasingly interactive by the 1990s, allowing immediate two-way communication and one-to-many communication. By the 2000s, the Internet was a multimedia source for both information and entertainment as it quickly became an integral part of our daily lives. For example, in 2000, about 50 percent of American adults were connected to the Internet; by 2012 about 80 percent of American adults used the Internet.2
