Although still a multibillion-dollar industry, 2013 saw a slight drop in total book sales from 2012 (from $27.12 billion to $27.01 billion). Experts attribute some of this to a tapering off of the big boost the trade book segment of the industry got in 2012 from the Fifty Shades and Hunger Games trilogies. This graph shows the breakdown of the trade segment (still the publishing industry’s largest segment, with $14.63 billion in sales) by type of book.
