FIGURE 13.2 The acidic and heavy metal–laden water from the breached Gold King Mine of southern Colorado (see chapter-opening photo) gushing from this culvert (left) poured millions of gallons of contaminated water into the Animas River. This is a clear example of a point source of pollution. In contrast, the Genesee River near Rochester, New York (right), has been polluted by runoff during spring snowmelt in an urban landscape. Consequently, this contamination cannot be traced to a particular point in the landscape.
