FIGURE 13.12 Pacific bluefin tuna spawn in the western Pacific Ocean off the coast of Asia and then migrate to the eastern Pacific Ocean to feed in the highly productive coastal waters off North America. The juvenile bluefin tuna developing in the waters off Japan, following the Fukushima nuclear accident, absorbed radioactive material leaked during the disaster and brought it with them in their transpacific migration.
