DEAD ZONE IN THE GULF OF MEXICO
FIGURE 13.29 Eutrophication of coastal waters resulting mainly from nutrient additions with runoff from the Mississippi River Basin has produced an extensive area of bottom water that is largely devoid of dissolved oxygen, a condition called hypoxia. The process excludes or kills all fish and shellfish in the area, a situation that is ecologically and economically devastating to the region.
