Rachel Carson Profile (April 21, 2007)
Synopsis
With her book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson ushered in the new era of environmentalism. Silent Spring's thesis was that America's widespread use of chemical pesticides to support its booming economy would lead to long-term health consequences in humans. Her research led President John F. Kennedy to appoint an independent commission to investigate the effects of pesticides, which ultimately supported her findings and led to the creation of the EPA and ban of pesticide DDT.
