Calculating a Spearman Correlation Coefficient The first step in calculating a Spearman correlation coefficient is creating a table that includes the ranks for all participants—countries, in this case—on both variables of interest (accomplishment-related national pride and competitiveness). We then calculate differences for each participant (country, here) and square each difference.
