Pattern baldness is a hereditary trait. Recent research demonstrated that a gene for pattern baldness is linked to genetic markers located on the X chromosome, leading to the discovery that pattern baldness is influenced by variation in the androgen-receptor gene. The trait is seen in John Adams (1735–1826), the second president of the United States.
