Rezarta: Intrinsic motivation is what drives you to do things, because it-- you do it for you because you enjoy doing it, or you like doing it. And you get personal satisfaction from doing it. The action itself is something that you like.

Madison: An example would be-- I played soccer for 14 years. And even though practice and stuff was really hard, I still went because I wanted to go-- because it made me feel good playing.
Rezarta: So I go to this family and I volunteer. They were refugees from Syria. I go there and I teach them English, and I play with their kids. And the goal is to help them adapt to their life here.
And I have nothing to win for it, but it makes me so happy every time I'm there, because I feel like I'm with my family. So it's something that I do because of an intrinsic motivation. I just enjoy being with them.
Sharon: Something that motivates me intrinsically is needlework. I knit, crochet-- I have something beautiful when I'm done.
Rezarta: An extrinsic motivation is something that you do in order to get a reward after you complete the action, or because you want to avoid the punishment if you don't do it.

Lauren: Extrinsic motivation is whenever you get motivated by something outside of yourself. So it'd an external stimulus. And it'd be-- if I go to school for four years, my dad will buy me a new car.
Sharon: You do it more for the end results, such as cleaning your house. I don't enjoy it. But I don't like living in filth, so I do it.
Madison: So I work because I have to work to get money to pay for my bills. So the whole reason to work is so that-- to get that extra money.
Rezarta: You work in order to get money, or because you have no other choice, or because you don't want to be in the streets. It can be both intrinsic and extrinsic though with work, depending on what you would like to do. For example, when to become a psychologist-- I want to be a psychologist-- I'll be working for the money because it's an extrinsic motivation. But also I'll enjoy doing it, so it's going to be intrinsic as well.
Madison: So at one point in my life, I was intrinsically motivated to play soccer, because it made me feel good. And I really enjoyed playing. And when I transferred from middle school to high school my mom, became an extrinsic force, because she wanted me to get scholarships.
So soccer became less intrinsic than extrinsic. So it really made my motivation go down, because I wasn't doing it because I loved it. I was doing it because I had to do it for a scholarship.
Sharon: Intrinsically brings more joy to me. I'm more self-motivated to do it. Extrinsically I do it more because I have to, or because it's required of me.
