Health professionals use data provided by government health agencies to understand how effective nutrition and health programs are nationwide. Healthy People 2020, a government-sponsored initiative, identifies measurable health improvement objectives and goals for Americans. The nutrition-related objectives recommend that we should consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods within and across different food groups, emphasizing whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and lean meats and other sources of protein. Americans should eat only as many calories as they need, and should limit their intake of saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, sodium (salt), and alcohol.
