4.3 Current Geographic Issues

Europe today is in a state of transition as a result of two major changes that occurred during the 1990s: the demise of the Soviet Union (discussed and throughout Chapter 5) and the rise of the European Union. These developments have already brought greater peace, prosperity, and world leadership to Europe. However, after years of increasing success and expansion, the European Union and its common currency are threatened by the grave financial difficulties of several member states, primarily in South Europe.
