4.4 Subregions of Europe

The subregions of Europe take on added significance these days because of the financial and social crises faced by the European Union. Immigration, unemployment, aging populations, global competitiveness, and the economic recession are perceived, fairly or not, to fall along subregional divisions. Countries in South and Central Europe are seen as causing the problems, and countries in West and North Europe as the more stable and financially responsible entities that must bail out the others.
