The goals of the Soviet experiment begun in 1917 were unique in human history: to reform, quickly and totally, an entire human society. The Soviet Union’s collapse brought an even more rapid shift from centrally planned economies to market economies. The transition remains incomplete, and for many, life is proceeding amid economic, political, and social uncertainty.
