6.4 Subregions of North Africa and Southwest Asia

The subregions of North Africa and Southwest Asia present a mosaic of the issues that have been discussed so far in this chapter. Although all countries in the region except Israel share a strong tradition of Islam, they vary in how Islam is interpreted in national life and the extent to which Westernization is accepted. They also vary in prosperity and in the evenness of the distribution of wealth in the general population.
